Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer’s

Extracts from the lecture delivered by Irina Redman on the 28.03.2015 at the Conference of the Association of Natural Medicine.

One Doctor said that we invest 5 times more money in silicon breast implants and  ‘drugs for men Viagra type’ and in several years we shall have woman with beautiful breasts and men with strong potency but they would not have a clue why on Earth they need it.

Its a good question and very actual and pressing, especially if to remember that in 2013 there were 815827 people with dementia in the UK THIS REPRESENTS 1 IN EVERY 14 PEOPLE OF THE POPULATION AGED 65 YEARS AND OVER.

If current trends continue and no action is taken, the number of people with dementia in the UK  in 2015 will be 856700 and 1142677 people by 2025.

By the way not all people with dementia are properly diagnosed and the figures could be much worse.

These statistic was taken from official Alzheimer’s society web site, and my question is

– what does it mean – no action is taken?

What action could be taken by population, if for the moment there is no cure ? Even more – doctors don’t know exact reasons of Alzheimer’s disease.

Little bit of history.

Alzheimer’s disease sounds now frightening and I was interested when and how it started?

1906, Frankfurt on Miene, Germany.

Young doctor Alois Alzheimer was working in the mental hospital. He noticed a woman who was wondering around wothout any purpose, she did not know where she was or what was the time.

Dr. Alzheimer wrote down their first consultation

– What is your name?

– Frau Augusta.

– Who are you?

– Frau Augusta.

– How old are you?

– 51.

– Where do you live?

– Oh, you have been to our house already.

– Where do you live?

– I am confused.

– Are you married?

– I don’t know. I have a daughter, she is 52, she lives in Berlin.

Frau Augusta died when she was in her early fifties, she was ill for 4.5 years. Postmortem showed rice looking protein plugs in her brain. In 1906 Dr. Alzheimer reported this conversation and his conclusions at the conference of doctors psychiatrists in Germany, that’s how first case of Alzheimer’s was recorded. Now 109 years later there is still no cure for this disease, although doctors know much more about it. Probably its because there is not one reason of Alzheimer’s disease, but many different reasons or their combinations. What doctors do know  its what pathological processes are going on in the brain of AD sufferer.

There are 2 different forms of abnormal proteins that are involved in AD. Beta Amyloid protein build up on neurons and stops transmissions from one neuron to another, Serum Amyloid P Compound is another protein that builds up in neurons, already dead and dying nerve cells contain tangles which are made up of twisted strands of protein. The cortex / part of the brain which is mostly damaged by AD/ shrivels up, damaging areas involved in thinking, planning and remembering. Shrinkage is especially severe in the hippo-campus an area of the cortex that plays a key role in formation of new memories.

Somebody could be ill with AD for as long as 15 – 20 years and would not know about it.

Its because the brain has enormous compensations abilities, so when the AD IS OBVIOUS IT MEANS THAT THE COMPENSATION ABILITIES OF THE BRAIN ARE DEPLETED AND THE DEAD NEURON CELLS HAVE  REACHED threshold level.

 

Prevalence of AD.

Now dementia is on the 3d place, heart diseases and oncology but in 10 years it will be on the first place.

There are 3 reasons for this

1. we live longer

2. toxicity in the world

3. AD is becoming younger

 

 How effective are treatment of AD?

the remedies that are used to day could slow down the disease, but there is no cure for the moment.

The treatment of AD should focus on the keeping the neurons active, to do it its important to diagnose the AD as soon as possible and start the treatment as soon as possible.

If to slow down the speed of dying of neurons then its possible that during the life until 90 -100 years the amount of neurons would not fall to the level when the AD is taking the persons life in its hands.

 

How its possible to diagnose the AD in the very beginning?

Doctors and public should know first signs of AD. For the moment we believe that

Sudden Loss or poor sense of smell

Constipation

Specific heart problems

Could indicate of the beginning of disease

.  these symptoms separately or all together could indicate  other disease.

Of course there is even more concern if these symptoms go together with loss of resent memories.

There are some blood tests are in the process of development where blood plasma could also indicate first signs of the AD.

.How to slow down the death of neurons?

There is research now about   neuropeptides.

Death of the cell could happen because of many different reasons.

  For example  oxidation stress, there are store of free radicals in the cell which kill the cell.

Antioxidants could help.

  Neuropeptides are molecules from amino acids, they slow down the death of neurons and activate compensation processes. There is research about neuropeptides., they can be made chemically, gene engineering , but they are also produced in the body in different cells esp. in brain cells.

 In Russia there was a drug called semax produced, this drug was given to cosmonauts, but there are side effects and for the moment the research work is going on. 

 

Stem cells. In Moscow in Dr Ugrumov clinic the research was stopped, as it was gave brilliant result on animals but people volunteers had better result for ½ year and then it was back where it was.

Any other ways to treat AD without drugs?

Its fact –  if to switch off eye sight, hearing and other senses brain will deteriorate quicker.

We don’t know exact reasons or combination of reason but there are some factors that are related to the development of AD.

 

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR AD.

 

  1. Age / this is only one reason for certain so far/

after 65

  1. Family history.

 Having a parent or close blood relative with AD slightly increases the risk.

 GENETIC MUTATIONS. Three genetic mutations are known to cause the early onset of the AD.

3. Gender,

 woman are more likely to develop AD.

4. Some medical conditions

 such as high blood pressure, diabetes could increase the risk of AD. About high cholesterol we shall talk.

5. Education.

 Some research showed that there is a link between lower educations and higher risk of AD, other research showed that even very intelligent people could develop the AD.

6. Head injury and head tumors,

 there is link that head injury and head tumors could be related to higher risk of developing of the AD.

7. Toxicity

 with heavy metals. Like aluminum  mercury.

8. The low level inflammation process

 which take place in the brain could be the reason of AD.. Professor psychiatrist from Riga Mr Vladimir Kuznezov considers that AD could be contagious, not AD itself by herpes that many people have on there lips. The herpes virus is the infection that could penetrate into the brain and could start the slow inflammation process that will trigger the build up of amyloidal proteins. This does not mean of course that everybody who had herpes infection in the past will develop the AD, but there was a link between these two diseases.

Diet rich with processed meat,

 cheap sausages,

processed cheeses, white sugar, white flower, white salt potentially could increase the risk of AD.

  1. Lack of vitamins

11.. Smoking Avoid smoking as smokers double the risk of developing AD.

especially sleeping pills potentially could be related to the AD.

     13. Extra weight.
 Study in Neurology online in March 2008 showed a potential link between excessive belly fat among people in their 40 and onset of the AD 35 YEARS LATER. 6583 people were in the study and if waist is 20% more the risk is 3 times more.

What could be done to reduce the risk Alzheimer’s disease?

  1. Anti inflammatory ing. included in the diet turmeric. Aspirin could help with fight against AD
  2. Exercise. Aim is at least 30 min of the aerobic activity such as walking, swimming, cycling, etc.
  3. Mind and body. The theory is that mentally stimulating activities such as reading, playing cards etc. could be very good. It’s necessary to train the brain especially when aging. It could be leaning new language, crosswords, talking to friends, creative writing, leaning new skills, drawing, playing chess.
  4. Fasting. Its possibility that fasting could reduce the risk of AD but fasting could be dangerous.
  5. Diet. Mediterranean diet could be good and important, also green tea, cinnamon and food rich with fecitin

Danger of estrogen for men.

The excretion of estrogen from the body can help to prevent cancer and can cause weight loss. A high level of estrogen is a problem, both for men and for women. This is primarily because there is a huge amount of synthetic estrogen that affects us in everyday life. There are estrogens in plastic bottles, cosmetics, shampoos and personal care products, coatings on oil-based pesticides and even animal products. It is possible, that the negative effect of excess estrogen in the male body manifests itself in problems with the prostate and in women – breast cancer.
However, trouble is not only in contact with environmental estrogens but, also to the impaired metabolism of estrogens, the body often produces too much, and it directly affects the prostate gland of men.

Estrogens are a group of hormones that are produced mainly by the ovaries in women and testes in men, the main of which estradiol or “estrogen”. For men, they play a major role in sperm production and support bone health. Estrogens are also produced in other tissues in men and women, including fat and the brain.
The amount of estrogen needed by men is very little.
But men often have an excess of it.
Firstly, the enzyme aromatase ( produced by the adrenal glands located in tissues throughout the body), converts testosterone to estrogen. Aromatase contained in fats, so a complete male estrogen levels above and below the level of testosterone. The good news is that you can block aromatase in a natural way by eating the right foods or supplements. There are also drugs that slow down the formation of aromatase, but it is better to choose the natural way, without using chemicals.
Secondly, men have an excess of female hormones due to the synthetic estrogen in the environment, such as bisphenol A and phthalates. Bisphenol A is an oil-based chemical which mimics estrogen.
It is an endocrine disruptor – a substance which interferes with the production, secretion, transport, action, function and elimination of natural hormones. BPA can imitate our body’s own hormones in a way that could be hazardous for health. Babies and young children are said to be especially sensitive to the effects of BPA. For example, in one study published in the «Toxicology Letters» Journal, found that the effects of Bisphenol A leads to a reduction of testosterone and deterioration of sexual function in rats, because it inhibits the production of androstenedione, a hormone, which is partially made of testosterone.
Phthalates is another chemical that is used in the manufacture of plastics and many personal care products such as shampoos and lotions. It contributes to the excessive level of estrogen and should be neutralized quickly and safely in order to minimize the damage that it has on the body’s tissues. Just as you can prevent aromatase through proper diet, you can give your body the nutrients needed to remove excess estrogen from the body naturally.
Estrogens are processed in the liver. The body converts excess estrogen compounds which can be withdrawn from the body. The theory is that there are three ways of processing. One of them / not the official theory/ is “toxic” pathway, which is associated with the development of cancer, the second is adverse for health, and the third – a more favorable and most suitable.?????????????
Now read quickly next paragraph and immediately forget it!
If your body can process estrogens, transforming them into 2-h
idroksiestrogeny (C-2 way) – this is best way, with less risk of cancer. If the body processes via the estrogen 16-alpha-hydroxy path (transforming the molecules into hidroksiestrogeny-16 or C-16 way), there will be a greater risk of cancer. It is not necessary to puzzle over these chemical pathways titles, just to remember that the fact that the article will be referred to the C-2 way – better health, and more preferably, a C-16 pathway is toxic and undesirable. There is one more way of removing the adverse estrogen from the body / – P-4,/ which should also be avoided. The best solution to – find out, how to reduce estrogen in the body and put them at the C-2 path, it needs to provide a healthy gastrointestinal system.
How to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and its negative impact
1) Improve the condition of the gastrointestinal system
An unhealthy gastro-intestinal system can inhibit the excretion of excess estrogen from the body and contribute to its uptake. For removing estrogen from the body of the gastrointestinal system, an important role is played by the fiber and the so-called Lignans. Lignans are antioxidants that have both soluble and insoluble fiber. They also have anti-estrogenic effects, and are found in a variety of seeds, grains and vegetables.
For example, flax seeds, can bind to the estrogen in the digestive tract, so that together they will be excreted.
To make it simple – eat more plant foods that include fiber and lignans, including flax, vegetables and bran /oat, rye, barley, leeks, onion, Jerusalem artichoke, etc./
Probiotics are also important because they increase the “good bacteria” in the intestine and maintain the function of neurotransmitters (relevant chemicals). You should use appropriate products to replenish stocks of probiotics.
A suitable diet to reduce estrogen in the body should be low carbohydrate, high in protein and omega-3.
Products with a high concentration of EPA and DHA fatty acid contained primarily in fish oil you should have every day, to reduce estrogen in the body and their toxic effects.
A high protein content in the diet will help improve the structure of tissues throughout the body of most people. In addition, a diet low in protein reduces the activity of the so-called cytochrome P450 (a protein complex) that outputs estrogen. The amino acids lysine and threonine (which can be obtained only by eating protein), maintains liver function and assists in the processing of estrogen. It is therefore considered that proteins containing these acids can help get rid of estrogen in the body. Lysine and threonine are found in meat, fish, beans, eggs and some seeds (sesame, fenugreek). Sesame seeds are also a source of fiber, and fenugreek (legume) helps reduce the formation of insulin in response to carbohydrates that enter the body. As you can see sesame seeds and fenugreek are a good addition to the diet to assist in the excretion of estrogen from the body and reduce toxicity.
2) Lose weight to reduce estrogen.
The more fat on the body, the greater will be the estrogen in the body. This is because adipose tissue, increases the amount of the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone to estrogen. The reduction of body fat and an increase muscle mass are key to cancer prevention and elimination of estrogen.

Another way to protect the tissue from circulating estrogen – is to keep it tied to sex hormones. When estrogen is bound to sex hormones via globulin, it is not available for binding to cell receptors and does not exert its estrogenic effect. Flax seeds are an especially good influence on the process of binding.

3. Phytoestrogens

You should include foods with phytoestrogens in the diet, as they will help to reduce natural and synthetic estrogens in the body. Phytoestrogens are a herbal compound that can bind to estrogen receptors, but they have only a 1/1000 adverse effect on the body as compared with natural or synthetic estrogens. When phytoestrogens bind to estrogen receptors, they replace it, and its damaging effect is neutralized.

Top phytoestrogens you can include in your diet are flax seeds, sesame seeds, parsley, alfalfa, clover, licorice root and legumes. The greens, flax and sesame seeds are easy to use in every day diet, and the others can be used once or twice a year as an extra estrogen detox. This recommendation applies only to those who have an excess of estrogen in the body.
4. Stop the conversion of testosterone to estrogen
Blocking aromatase is the key to getting rid of estrogen, because it plays a major role in the production of estrogen in men.
Selenium, melatonin, zinc, green tea and citrus flavonones (substances in the skins of orange, grapefruit, and tomatoes) all have a proven effect om aromatase. They can be included in your diet.
5. Improve metabolism of estrogen to reduce its amount of body

Promote estrogen excretion via the C-2 pathway, this is the most important thing you can do to prevent cancer. The first phase of the elimination of estrogen enzyme is to ensure its removal by changing estrogen molecules.
The 2-carbon molecule has a very weak estrogenic activity, and is called a ‘good’ estrogen. In contrast 16-carbon molecule has high oestrogenic activity and promotes tissue damage that could lead to cancer.
Essential nutrients to support the C-2 pathways are EPA fatty acids (fish oil), phytoestrogens, and special importance given to B vitamins and a substance called DIM. B vitamins / especially B6, B12 and folic acid/ contribute to C-2 path. B6 is also required to reduce the binding to estrogen receptors, i.e., this vitamin can prevent cell damage and the development of cancer.
DIM – is a biological compound, it could be found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower.
6. Remove as much as possible of the excess estrogen
The elimination of estrogen can lead to some problems. Two phenomena can happen which can create a big problem. First, estrogen molecules ejected by the C-2 pathway, can easily turn into something called quinones that are “highly reactive” and can damage DNA and cause cancer.
In order to avoid the formation of quinones, it is necessary to have a sufficient amount of magnesium and alpha-lipoic acid as supplements.
When estrogen passes through the intestine, it must be linked to glucuronic acid – this is the right way for the safe removal of estrogen. If somebody has an unhealthy digestive system there is a lot of “bad” intestinal bacteria. The “bad” bacteria called glucouronidase, break the link between estrogen and glucuronic acid, and estrogen again is absorbed into the bloodstream. To avoid this, you need a healthy gastro-intestinal system, for this you need to use good quality probiotics.

The necessary nutrients for detoxification and elimination of estrogen from the body are vitamins, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, DIM, green tea, magnesium, selenium and melatonin. Another important element, which was not mentioned earlier is the E vitamin, a powerful antioxidant.

7. Drink the right beverages

It is necessary to eliminate the most alcohol for liver health. The only exception is a wine rich in resveratrol or trans-resveratrol, which are suitable for the suppression of aromatase (an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen), thus reducing the level of estrogen. For example, one study showed that red (but not white) wine acted as an aromatase inhibitor and led to a decrease in estrogen levels after one month of use in women during pre-menopause. A group of women who drank eight ounces (227 grams) of red wine per day had higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of estrogen than in the group in which they drank white wine on a daily basis. Previous studies have shown that red wine reduces the overall risk of cancer, and it provides cardio protective effects along with increased insulin sensitivity.
What a nice study, it’s a pity I did not know about it when volunteers were needed!

• minimize contact with substances, which is composed of synthetic estrogens: plastics, many hygiene products, aerosol insecticide, meat from animals that were fed unhealthily.

The diet should include: flax seeds and sesame seeds, herbs, bran cereal (oats, rye, barley), probiotics natural live yogurt, artichokes, oat flakes, leek, onion, brown bread, fish (primarily organic salmon, sardines, herring, anchovy), beans and other legumes, drink green tea.

Men with low libido, female breasts, 9 months pregnant belly, looking like a granny – not appealing picture / even not mentioning health issues/.
